Truly commercialised, aggregate concrete underfoot really hard on your feet (bring jandals), lots of pools to choose from all at different temperatures, great water slides/rides and a great days outing for families with lots of active kids. They have a pool specifically for adults only (thank you) but kids still try to sneak in and spoil your day. A great movie screen pool which is really quite hot, and too hot to spend the entire movie there. You should be prepared to stay for the day too - so much to do if you have kids! 2. Aquatic Park, Parakai Springs

150 Parkhurst Road, Parakai

Parakai Springs offers a secluded private venue set in a landscaped garden with its own thermal rock pool. A cascading waterfall fills the rock-rimmed hot spring with sparkling clear geothermal water. Surrounded by native pongas, palms and lawn, it's a delightful place to enjoy a lunch or dinner.

3. Kaitoke Hot Springs

Great Barrier Island

This pool rocks. Its about 30mins walk from the road that traverses the island from Clria to Whangparapara. You may think you are at the pool when you get to a spot where the creek you end up following forks. The water is hot, but this is a mud wallow compared to the great 4ft deep sandstone pool you'll find by following the left fork for 30m. [Murdoch,NZ]

Palm Springs at Parakai is a simple and relaxing complex of pools about 40 minutes from Auckland. Light meals available. Somewhat rundown but popular with those who don't want crowds and hydroslides. Warmly recommended. [Ian Boyd-Bell, New Zealand]
