Directions

The pool is on the side of Hot Springs creek approx 100 metres upstream of its confluence with the Wanganui River on the true left bank about 1 hours walk up the river from the roadend which is approx 5 km north of Harihari. [Joe Hansen, Masterton]

Follow the track up the true right bank. It takes about an hour to get there. Hot Pool Creek joins the river on the true left bank. There are a couple of creeks on the true left before, but you know when you are at Hot Pool Creek because of the grassy flat before it. Hot Pool Creek is at the top of the flat. We crossed the river directly opposite Hot Pool Creek. The Wanganui is wide and shallow at this point. A few meters before the bank turn upstream to avoid a deep pool where Hot Springs Creek joins the Wanganui. The hot springs are about 50 metres up the creek on the left hand side (true right of the creek) under a low mossy bluff well away from the flow of the creek. Follow the smell of sulfur! There is a rake and shovel there to clean out the pool. [Branton Kenton-Dau, Chirstchurch]

Nice pools. Crossed river at a good crossing about 200m up from Hot Springs Creek confluence. Would be harder to cross back because of the angle of crossing. River had a bit of water in it though. Paddled back over in an inflatable boat we took up.

Mid March 2013. After TWO month of no rain and REALLY dry weather the Wanganui River was absolutely impossible to cross. Belly deep water and incredibly quick and strong flow. The hike itself (1h+ from the public car park) was unpleasant due to the massive rock slides and various flooded areas along the track. Go there only if you really know what you're doing; otherwise just stop at the Amethyst HS, a whole 5 minutes from the same car park :)

Very nice pool (once slime has been removed) would comfortably hold 12+ people. Camping is a bit rough beside pools, if you head slightly up the Wanganui river you will find a very pleasant grassy terrace (5-10mins from pools). This makes an excellent weekend trip from CHCH with only 3 hours walking each day.
