Hurunui River (South Branch) Hot Springs

Hurunui River (South Branch) Hot Springs
Canterbury
Hurunui River, South of Lake Taylor
Description

Sadly we don’t have a decent description for this hotpool. Can you write one?

Directions

Located in Canterbury not West Coast. Situated on DOC land and definately not private land. The clearing at the start of the 250m bush track is located 200m West of the DOC fence on the true left bank of the river. The Hut refered to in the book was burned down a few years ago and a new DOC hut built downstream which is not available for private use. Nice tepid pool. Just put the plug into the bath and sit back !! [Pete, ChCH]

Hi , owned Eskhead Station from 1978 , the bath was installed by the Dampier Crossly . This hot spring is on the same fault line as the Lewis Pass hot springs . It is not difficult to find, as it has a strong sulphur smell . but it is half way up the South branch after the Stoney creek fan , at least 1 hour walk and a dozen river crossings . Did not know the top bivi had been burnt down . This was a great river valley for sheep and Cows , In my time it belonged to Eskhead The first time I went up this river I thought I would never find the Bivi It was August , You will have to read my book to find out more

It should be noted that this is not on private land but you have to cross private land to get there , so stop at homestead and ask the nice people

I found the temperature of the water on the day I used it was perfect. The bath and changing shelter would have been installed by the DoC Mainland Island workers, I suspect. Read all about it on the tramping report website.

Yes can be hard to find. The "book" is a bit out of date as the DOC hut is now in a different position further up the valley. I suggest you ask at the hut (it's got semi-permanent staff doing trapping/research). Friendly folk who might even give you a cuppa. Otherwise the grid ref for L33 is about right (329288). Look for markers on the uphill bush edge of the clearing. The bath is way back in the bush about 5-10 mins walk from the flat. Not very hot but still nice (2006) JR

Spent 2 hours trying to find the bath that is supposed to exist here, according to the instructions in 'Hot Springs of New Zealand' by Sally Jackson and couldn't find anything! Very disappointing after having walked for 6-7 hours.
