Perth River Hot Springs

Perth River Hot Springs
West Coast
Perth River, above Scone Hut
Description

Following your nose down the perth river can lead you to many small cold to warm geothermal trickles. The best spot for a dip is not far from Scone Hut, below the Redfield bridge. There is a steady warm flow coming from under a rock into a small pool. Take a shovel as you will most likely need to dig a hole and create several dams. The lower the river level the better the experience. [Tate Bradley, Hoki]

Directions

about 70m downstream from the perth river swingbridge (redfield) on the true left hand side [Tate, New Zealand]

Just down stream 70-100m on the TL from the Redfield swingbridge follow your nose there is a strong sulphur smell. The spring flows at the rivers edge at normal river levels so stay at the rivers edge. When I was there the flow was not hot but warm and required alot of difficult digging and diverting cold water but had a great soak after a tough day on the mountains.

Difficult to make a large bath because of big rocks. Gets flooded out regularly so will need digging out most trips. Pleasant warm-hot temperature & easy to divert cold water into if it does get too hot.

strong sulphur smell where indicated above. low warm flow into small pool under large boulders, connected to Perth River, no way to create a 'hot pool' in Jan 2015. sulphur sent present at Nolans hut, not investigated.

Was up in mid Nov 2012, no sign of the hot pools so might need digging out. No shovel at Scone Hut. There's the occasional sulphur smell all the way down to Barlow Flats so further exploration with a shovel may yield dividends
