3km downstream of where SH 7 crosses Hope River
I kayaked down from the Hope R bridge. You can smell sulphur about 1 km above the gorge, even in a strong westerly, so there are springs well up river above the Horseshoe Springs, somewhere. As you approach the gorge, where the Glenhope access road starts to head uphill on river L, look for warm seeps in the gravel. If you trace these back you will find hot spots. Then go and get an...
North of Hanmer Forest Park, Hanmer Springs
The pools downstream were better, one hot, one perfect one cold. We spent the day there, good 4x4 track, need low range and diff lock for a few spots. Get access to the combination lock for the gate through the DOC website. Register your car for the st james conservation park and they give you the combination, it changes every 2 weeks. The pools have been well made with concrete and rocks, however there are...
Hurunui River, North of Lake Taylor, Lake Sumner Forest Park
Located on the walk towards Harpers Pass, on the true right of the Hurunui River.Easily spotted, look for a thermal waterfall beside the track, the access path is just north of this point. The pool has a thermal water input, with cold water also 'on tap'. The spring can be visited about 50 meters further up the hill from the pool.
Mackenzie Stream, Hurunui River
We found the pools to be perfect size for one person in each pool. Deep enough to soak up to the neck. A 3 hour return side trip from the north huranui springs (without packs). No sandflys (unlike the Huranui springs!!!)
Hope River, 27km from State Highway 7
Beautiful location, tucked into a grassy clearing - great for camping. Hotpools were not very hot the day we visited due to high rainfall, but still hot enough to get in. There are several pools around which people have built rock surrounds. Recommend going - but not if rivers are up as gets swamped by cold water.
State Highway 7, 15km south of Lewis Pass
Location info is accurate. Heaven on earth! Usually at least 2 natural hot pools dug out and rock-ringed - 1 large and hot, 1 medium-sized and warm. By a mountain river. Sometimes flooded out. Lots of sandflies.
Hurunui River, South of Lake Taylor
Sadly we don't have a decent description for this hotpool. Can you write one?
Corner Jacks Pass Road & Amuri Avenue, Hanmer Springs
Outdoor swimming complex, with lots of pools of varying temperatures, wave pool, two hydroslides, cafe/bar. Great outdoor fun for the family.
Lake Tekapo, Canterbury
Located in Lake Tekapo in the South Island, Tekapo Springs is a 3-hour drive from Christchurch or Queenstown. Tekapo Springs has three hot pools plus two cooler pools with lake and mountain views. Temperatures range from 27 to 39 degrees Celsius. The water isn’t geothermal but comes from a pure underground source near Tekapo. Tekapo Springs also has a day spa, ice skating rink & snow tube (winter), TRIPPO waterslide (summer), sauna/steam room with cold...
